Daily Pilot Story

I am so grateful for Susan Hoffman and The Daily Pilot’s story about grandparent visitation. Grandparent rights are really a child’s right to maintain a loving relationship with their grandparents. Severing a healthy, loving bond between a grandparent and grandchild is nothing less than emotional abuse. Some people make an assumption that all custodial parents do what is in the best interest of the child. That is not the case. Because parents feel empowered by the court system some treat their children as property, a tool to manipulate or hurt the grandparents, all without considering how the child feels. If all custodial parents considered their child’s feelings there would be no need for grandparent visitation laws. I did go to court and was awarded visitation. The judge found that it was in the best interest of my grandchild to preserve our bond. Going through an emotional and costly court battle was not what I wanted to do, but I couldn’t live with the thought that my precious grandchild was left to think that I was suddenly too busy to see her or speak to her, or that we simply forgot about her and stopped loving her without even saying good-bye.
