Playing Field
Grandparents seeking court ordered visitation with a grandchild are faced with the decision of either hiring an attorney or representing themselves. Yes, attorneys cost money, however if the respondent, the parent(s) end up retaining counsel, then the playing field is NOT level. There is no way that an inexperienced grandparent can prevail in court against an experienced attorney, who knows the system, the laws and the judges. if neither party has representation, then take advantage of the court’s self help center and maybe hire a paralegal to check over the petition package of forms. Either way, representing oneself in Superior Court is challenging to say the least. There are just too many unknowns.
